Campus Unrest kicks off in Oxford
matt by Matthew Willson January 15th, 2002

Cast aside any images of riotous student protest for now, it's actually one of the university town's more bizarre music nights, and comes fully endorsed by Drowned in Sound (well, the Oxford representative anyway)...

It goes on from 8 to 11 every Thursday night during term time, at the Pheonix Cinema on Walton Street (in the bar upstairs). The general theme of the night, for those who're into that kinda thing, seems to be sitting around chatting, DJing (bring your own records!), getting drunk on the cheap beer and envying other people's vinyl. heh

In a vain attempt to peg genres on the music that gets played, i'd say... hiphop, electronica, riot grrl, digital hardcore, obscure garage rock 7 inches, post-rock, random pop, lo-fi and an occasional bit of indie :-) Alternatively some bands/labels may be more useful to y'all:

"Some stuff we like:
Peaches, Bikini Kill, Kill rock stars, Ninja tune, ATR, Kraftwerk, Digital hardcore, The Make-up, Sleater Kinney, DJ Scud, Kid 606, Le Tigre, Coldcut, Deckwrecka, The Gossip, Autechre, Warp, KLF, The Fall, Miles Davis, Squarepusher, Roots Manuva, Brassy, Kid Koala, Max Tundra, Quannum, DJ Shadow, Grandaddy, The Bangs etc etc..."

Check out Oxford's own DIY label the youth club tape club for more randomness...
