iPod users: bowing to fashion or filling to capacity?
Mike_Diver by Mike Diver March 7th, 2005
So you've got an iPod, or some other fancy plastic slab of newfangled computerised happiness, enabling you to enjoy your entire record collection whilst on the move. Good for you. But, do you really need one? Just how much music is actually on that thing, really? Have you been suckered by the ad men and fashion mags into parting company with a wad of cash for something you'll never use to its potential? No? Really...?

A survey by WebTV Europe has discovered that the average owner of a digital MP3-type player listens to just 2% of what they've copied on to it and, more interestingly, they hardly ever come close to filling the player to its capacity. Which sort of begs the question: why bother at all?

The knock-on question facing the industry concerns whether or not high-capacity players are worthwhile products. It would seem not, which is encouraging news for mobile phone manufacturers busy adding MP3 functions to their new models.

Customers arguing that they do fill their players should shut up - be fair, when are you ever going to listen to that Urban Cookie Collective record your mother bought you 13 years ago?

DiScuss: Do you have a high-capacity MP3 player? Was it a worthwhile investment? Come on, prove my opinion wrong...
