My favourite painting...

JezCC [Edit] [Delete] 21:39, 9 January '06

After Lunch by Patrick Caulfield - Part of the pop-art movement in the late 50s or early 60s (I can't quite remember when). The picture depicts a scene of a restaurant, just after the lunchtime rush. The whole picture is done in black lines on a blue background apart from the picture in the back of the fish tank in the restaurant. This backing scene is a fairytale type of pitcure of a castle by a lake. I love this painting because the "realist" part is in the least prestigious place possible in the picture. reality only exists for the enjoyment of the fish. Reality is a cheap and tacky sheet of paper in a messy restaurant. This image of reality as an insignificant and fanciful part of a much larger and more mundane scene really resonates with me.

It hangs in the Tate Modern (or at least it did a couple of years ago)

Who also loves this painting?
