heres a thread that has a point to it actually

so you know when you go to a city in another country, lots of people will say stuff like "oh just go where the locals go, they're the best places" in relation to where you should eat, but in England that's not the case really. Locals will just eat in rubbish places. So why not elsewhere? Why is it a given that the places the locals go to will be better? Is it just something people say without questioning it? Do you say something like this? If so, why? Do you have any experiences or perhaps anecdotes of finding great places where local people eat? Or perhaps the opposite? What do you look for when trying to find a decent food eating place (café/restaurant/bar) in an unfamiliar city?
