proportional representation vs. first past the post

punkosaur [Edit] [Delete] 20:13, 6 February '16

not really a saturday night thread but anyway, which system do you prefer and why?

i prefer first past the post. it's not 'fair' but it's difficult to form a labour majority without it (labour has never won over 50% of the votes, which is what you'd need). a labour-green coalition outcome is probably the point of it but you are equally likely (probably more likely) to have a tory-ukip coalition - 3.8 million people (12.8%) voted ukip in the last election (compared to 1.1 million (3.8%) who voted green) and with proportional representation they would probably be in power now with the tories (because together they won 50% of the votes).

tl;dr first past the post, because even though it's the more frustrating option it's also the safer one in locking out really bad parties from parliament.
