There's no such thing as bad wine

hip_young_gunslinger [Edit] [Delete] 09:43, 9 December '15

I said this in a thread yesterday, and I thought I'd clarify.

I don't think there's any wine you can buy on sale which is really bad. Standardised production from large conglomerates means even the cheap stuff is competently made and perfectly drinkable. Add to this the fact that repeated studies have shown that the vast majority of people (and even some experts) cannot distinguish between cheap and expensive wines, and we can be sure that either a) price is not related to the quality of wine, and b it's all in the marketing. This doesn't mean that wines can't be different, or you won't have particular favourites. But those people who go on booze cruises to Calais to buy cheap French plonk "because they know their wine and even the cheap stuff is good" are idiots who don't appreciate the buying power of UK supermarkets.
