SSP What career paths can you embark on with an English degree?

in_wainbows [Edit] [Delete] 18:57, 12 October '14

This afternoon I was having a drink with my parents in our local Wetherspoons and they were discussing my future, specifically the type of job I should aim for once I graduate from uni (BA in English). For some reason they're adamant about me becoming a teacher, but I've never expressed any interest in being one. I've explained to them that I don't particularly fancy it, but they're attitude is 'well, what else are you going to do then?'

So it's occurred to me: what can you do with an English degree? I get the impression it's a subject which opens up a lot of doors, but that's it. I sorta assumed you can go into all kinds of work. But my parents seem to think that teaching is all I can do with one, and I feel like I'm being put into a position where I can't defend myself, because to be fair I haven't really given it much thought.

So what can you do with an English degree? I enjoy my course (as academic courses go) and there's no way I've made a bad decision, but I've always kinda thought that what you get in your degree (and to an extent, where you got it from) counts for a little bit more than what you did (with most BAs in general).

It's just annoying because my parents always give me grief whenever I say I want to do something in my life which surprises them. I should chill the fuck out shouldn't I.
