Is there any point buying a digital camera, or have smartphone cameras superseded those now?

WhiteLightWhiteCity [Edit] [Delete] 08:50, 1 August '14

I lost my 7 year-old crappy point-and-click Olympus camera on holiday in Italy last month. So I need to replace it, but I'm wondering whether I may as well just put the cash towards a new phone (that I've been considering recently anyway).

I'm not talking about professionals with SLRs or hobbyists who think photography is actually a legitimate artform, just something to take a picture of me in front of the colosseum or whatever to send to my Mum. Are Samsungs/Apples/etc basically sufficient, or is a standalone cheap basic digital camera still considerably better?
