Finding Vivian Maier (new film, photography-centric)

umlaut_ampersand [Edit] [Delete] 23:47, 25 July '14

This is the best film I’ve seen all year. You should consider going to see it*:

Bit of background here: http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2014/jul/19/our-nanny-vivian-maier-photographer

Her photos are really extraordinary. The guy behind the documentary certainly isn’t entirely selfless in wanting her work to be better known (and more expensive), but I think it definitely bears comparison to the work of Walker Evans or Diane Arbus and maybe even Cartier-Bresson.

I find characters like this endlessly fascinating – beyond eccentric, obviously obsessive about their art to the exclusion of everything else but without the desire or means to share it with others. See also Henry Darger and Fernando Pessoa who are equally remarkable.

(*Sadly, I’m not sure it’s got much of a release though – I could only find the ICA showing it.)
