Pillboxes

hip_young_gunslinger [Edit] [Delete] 12:45, 9 June '14

On a couple of recent train journeys, I've spotted pillboxes - those old WWII era concrete machine gun posts - in random fields. I have some questions.

Why were these built on random fields somewhere near Uffington and somewhere near Tamworth? What items of strategic importance were they protecting? Is it the trainlines themselves?

Who looks after pillboxes? Local councils? English Heritage? Dedicated volunteer groups?

Has anyone ever actually been in a pillbox? Are they full of empty cider cans from teenage parties/homeless dossers? Why do I only see them on trains but never when driving or walking?

THREAD OF THE WEEK.
