People of the North, assemble! Need travel advice (Peak District Centric)

Teepee_uk [Edit] [Delete] 08:36, 5 June '14

Have been charged with booking what is, to all extents and purposes, a walking holiday in the Peak District, at the end of August, on a reasonably tight budget. Bakewell, Matlock and such are on the places to go list; booking them in high season is prohibitively expensive though.
Have found a selection of faceless chain hotels to stay at, which work out significantly cheaper, and travel up from London is easy. However, I'm looking at travel links into these places and am split between which town to travel in to the Peak District from. Sheffield and Derby both seem to have good bus services in, and Chesterfield is very close (but seems to be less well served by public transport?). Which is the best place to stay in terms of travel links?
