DVDs vs streaming services

beautiful_balloon [Edit] [Delete] 18:20, 16 April '14

I was in HMV last week and looking at the DVDs felt like a very 00's experience. The Top 40 chart all retailed for £12.99 (so films like 'Diana' are on sale for the equivalent cost of two months worth of Netflix, hmm..) and of those films around half of them were family-orientated, suggesting sales are mostly propped up by gift purchases for nieces and nephews

Like most people here I've got a decent collection of DVDs, maybe around two hundred accumulated over the last decade or so. But my acquisition of new titles has dried up as streaming services have taken over and re-adjusted what I think is value-for-money for a disc that's unlikely to be watched more than once or twice. Now my collection feels like a relic in the same way that my CD shelves did before I cleared them all out, but there's not really an entirely satisfactory alternative.

So, do you think Netflix will ever get up to speed with decent films? For every IMDB 250'er there's maybe a thousand straight-to-television B-Movies that few people would ever want to watch

If you move to streaming what happens to special features? Whilst I don't think I've watched a special feature since being a Goodfellas-obsessed teenager I'm imagining there's still folks with an appetite for four-disc LOTR box-sets

Finally, do you still find it worthwhile to buy DVDs? Or do you think they'll eventually move into the realm of 'hobbyists'?
