CALVARY (new film-centric; for FFO of The Guard, In Bruges, etc.)

umlaut_ampersand [Edit] [Delete] 13:04, 7 April '14

Went to a free preview of this last weekend and, as is kinda the deal, it seems fair to share some positive word-of-mouth. Old festival review of it here: http://www.theguardian.com/film/2014/jan/20/sundance-film-festival-calvary-review

It has a really good set-up – Irish priest at confession gets told he’s going to be killed in seven days – and an excellent cast, but I was most impressed by the writing. There’s so, so much potential for it to head off into cliché, but it manages to avoid them in almost every instance. Brendan Gleeson's performance is immense.

Pretty obvious to say anyone who enjoyed In Bruges or The Guard is probably going to like it, but I also thought there were similarities with Fargo and Magnolia-era Paul Thomas Anderson. (There are also, inevitably, hints of Father Ted, but important to have some humour to lighten the otherwise heavy load.)

Looks like it’s out on general release Friday.
