The Food Weighouse

ModestGrouse [Edit] [Delete] 22:55, 9 March '14

Is this still a thing? I know the one in my town shut down ages ago. Would've thought it'd be the sort of business to thrive in Recessionageddon. Only got 16p to your name? No worries, get down the Food Weighouse for 16p worth of Cornflakes or Bombay Mix. Need to do a load of washing but you're waiting on giro day and can't be splashing out on frivolities like washing powder? Don't sweat it, get a cupload from The Food Weighouse for a pittance.

For those who don't know, The Food Weighouse was (maybe still is, I certainly haven't seen one in years) a shop that sold foodstuffs and stuff like washing powder by weight. Basically the shop was like the Pic N' Mix bit in Woolworths but for (mostly) non perishable goods - cereals, dried fruits, flour, sugar, coffee, sweets etc. You scoop out and bag up your Coco Pops, dried apricots etc, weigh them/print a sticker off like you do with loose fruit/veg at the supermarket, take it to the till and get charged accordingly.

Sort of like the 50p man from Benefits Street but without a minimum spend.
