Bookshops are freaking out because they realised they're stocking rape books

hip_young_gunslinger [Edit] [Delete] 12:37, 16 October '13

Don't know if anyone has been following this, but WH Smiths has shut down its website, Amazon has been delisting titles, etc, after it was shown that they were selling books by self-published writers which were full of rape, incest, bestiality etc.

Now, obviously it's up to the retailer to decide what books they stock, and they can decide that how they like. But how can they justify withdrawing these books, when they almost certainly stock things like the Marquis de Sade? Or Alan Moore's Lost Girls?

We've discussed before the government trying to ban 'rape porn' and if that is materially different from films which depict rape - is it the same for books? Should we ban a title which is an 'erotic' rape book, but allow Ovid's Metamorphoses because it's different?

Seems odd that we can go crazy for Fifty Shades, yet gnash our teeth about this kind of stuff. Last week everyone was laughing about dinosaur erotica... where do you draw the line?
