I got so bored last night that i watched the film Patriot Games. Didn't really know it was IRA-related, etc. Gave it about an hour, was as bad a film as i'd seen, so i went to bed.

All the fucking ridiculous accents got me thinking, though, about films that have been set in the non-English parts of Britain & Ireland (obviously Patriot Games was actually set in London). As in, properly set there, not just filmed there, or a few scenes there, etc (like, say, The 39 Steps).

I think i could name up to around half-a-dozen good films that the country of Scotland has made or at least hosted - Trainspotting, Red Road, Local Hero, The Wicker Man...yeah, that's probably it, obviously Highlander and Braveheart, etc, are fucking stupid nonsense, and franchisey bullshit for kids like Harry Potter doesn't count, but i will allow Whisky Galore, but not Morvern Callar (rubbish).

Proper Ireland's probably done around a similar amount of good films - Hunger, My Left Foot, other dark weepy nonsense, then, erm... In Bruges is okay, i guess. The Commitments, possibly. From a comedy point of view, obviously you can't fault The Van, whereas Once is clearly a terrible film all round.

Wales - fuck all. Obviously Sumbarine doesn't count.

Northern Ireland - nothing.
