why won't this just work.

i have two tables. one contains values, the other contains min and max values to create a band. i want to return records where the value in the first table falls outside the band

<[tblBands!Min] Or >[tblBands!Max]

entered in the criteria under the value i'm checking feels like it should work. but it does. booooo. why?
