Could a computer ever think?

brainfeedr [Edit] [Delete] 11:59, 13 April '13

I have to write an essay on the above question, and I think it's pretty interesting. I'd like to hear what you guys think. So far I think it seems obvious that there's no fundamental reason a computer couldn't think. Obviously we want to define 'to think' here as something more than performing calculations etc., like to have consciousness. Any argument I've read conceptually rebutting the possibility seems rooted in an intuitive dislike of considering our own consciousness as an emergent property of the physical make-up of our brains. What do you reckon?
