Network Gurus of DiS please advise me (horrible More Caramel Snickers offered as payment)

saps [Edit] [Delete] 10:09, 11 March '13

I have two more of these left, cat_race has bagged himself the third.

Anyway, I live in a house full of men whose lives are on the skids (and can't clean up after their cunting selves in the communal kitchen) and we all share a communal wi-fi router downstairs in the main hallway.

I'm one and a half floors up from it and although the signal seems pretty good outside my door, once I'm in my room it's pretty much a lottery and the signal is rarely better than poor. I use a smartphone which fares slightly better than my Xbox. On the latter Netflix and Lovefilm will always stop at some point and sometimes drop out altogether as does Xbox live.

I bought one of these (http://www.maplin.co.uk/tp-link-300mbps-universal-wireless-n-range-extender-682661) on Saturday and plugged it in the hallway where the signal seems good. It's a doddle to configure so I know I didn't screw that bit up but it hasn't really made any difference at all.

Do you think this one will be better?

There is a BT socket in my room and I'm wondering whether I shouldn't just cut my losses and go for my own supply - problem is I don't know how long I'll stay here.

(too long; didn't want a Snickers anyway)
