In the market for a new car. Got my eyes set on a nearly-new Golf. Need it to be family-proof for the near future and so spacious, safe, easy for the missus to drive and park etc.

I've always liked the Golf but it is a bit common and quite pricey relative to other cars (like a Leon is a few G cheaper, and an Audi is pretty much the same price). Anyone else got any ideas on small family cars which will last 10 years no bother and preferably a decent diesel with a bit of poke.

Also used car dealers are bloody terrifying.
