How do you go about learning about something totally from scratch?

Kitchmo [Edit] [Delete] 20:45, 10 December '12

I was reading the computer chips thread, and realised that I know literally nothing about *how* computer hardware works. I understand a little bit about software but nothing about the physical bits.

So, I decided to remedy this, and did a bit of googling... and everything I found was too advanced for me. So without going back to school and doing a GCSE in computer science how can I leanr about computers, totally from scratch?

Also, what do you know nothing about? What was the last thing you learned where you started from nothing?
