A thread for recommending lesser-known TV series

beautiful_balloon [Edit] [Delete] 15:23, 25 October '12

As Winter's on its way I thought it could be useful to have a thread where we recommend TV shows that people might not be so familiar with - I'm needing some new avenues to explore as I've pretty much finished all the landmark shows that everyone knows and loves, that is:

Twin Peaks
Sopranos
The Wire
Mad Men
Breaking Bad
Arrested Development
The West Wing

If you could say what the show is and maybe post a relevant link and an explanation?

I'll go with The Twilight Zone. Hardly an unknown show, but I was really surprised with how genuinely creepy they remain despite their age. The episodes remind me of JG Ballard short stories, or perhaps a pre-cursor to what Charlie Brooker was trying to achieve with Black Mirror. Each episode depicts a sort of eerie liminal world, simultaneously recognisable but distorted and odd. They usually have some sort of moral or twist at the end, and now that the episodes are 50+ years old the effect of them seeming to come from a distant world is enhanced, IMO. Well worth watching - here's a list of some of the best
