I ask because I was pondering recently on the fact that whenever I buy a whopper I notice that the lettuce in it always seems to be square crunchy chunks chopped from the near the base of the leaves, never the tips or other bits of the leaf.

Do they just buy in those bits on the cheap with the nicer bits going to other uses?
