What do you reckon bout this then?

So, I've had my mate round recently hanging doors and stuff. He's a struggling chippie so I thought I'd hook a brother up with some work. Anyway, I asked him to hang a mirror for me. I could probably have done this myself, but it is very big and heavy so I thought I'd leave it to the expert.
So, I was watching the game last night and the mirror came falling down and smashed on the dining table. Glass everywhere, as you can imagine. It also ripped my jacket and scratched my new bike, which was located directly below.
So...here is the problem - do I charge my friend for the mirror (it was £60) not too bothered about the coat, but I'm feeling quite aprehensive about having this most awkward of conversations. If it was any old tradesman, then I would not hesitate, but when it's your mate...it makes it that much more difficult, no?
How do I approach this? shall I ask him if he's insured? let me know.
