how quickly do you read?

incandenza_ [Edit] [Delete] 23:09, 6 April '12

I prefer to amble, taking everything in as deeply as possible, realising the characters, the locations, the thoughts, emotions, and sensory information to the fullest extent.

as the narrative in a book of fiction presses towards a climactic point, as threads start to dovetail, I do tend to pick up the pace, and generally I'll finish a book in a flurry of pages. but generally, speed reading is pretty unappealing.

I sometimes hear people brag about how quickly they finished a book, how many they read in any given period of time, and I can't help but doubt the depth to which they've experienced and appreciated the book. at least when I was younger and breezed through books in a flurry of leafed pages and crazy eye movement, I often suffered a patchy kind of amnesia, and a less profound sense of experience.

n.b. I read non-fiction pretty quickly, varying on how lively or dry the prose is.

yeah. now you.
