I've been watching that Jeremy Paxman documentary Empire. It's rather good. That said, the general undercurrent to it is 'look how we ballsed everything up'. Of course the Empire was responsible for some horrible things (many of which are documented in the programme), but surely there were some good things too: infrastructure (railways and the like); legal systems and so forth.

What do you reckon?
