Music Social More…

this whole KONY 2012 thing

cousin_merle [Edit] [Delete] 11:34, 7 March '12

so this video has taken over my facebook newsfeed:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4MnpzG5Sqc

and here's an article suggesting the campaign might not be all it's cracked up to be:
http://chrisblattman.com/2009/03/04/visible-children/

Kony is an evil shit, no doubt about it. Nevertheless, I can't make my mind up on how I feel about this video.
Does the fact that such a campaign is smug, superficial and cringingly sentimental take away from the fact that people I never would have expected to be remotely interested in a "good cause" are now decidedly interested? Surely this is a good thing?
I don't want to put people's entire support of the campaign down to crowd mentality or whatever, and i don't want to say this isn't a cause worth supporting.

But direct military intervention sounds like a crappy idea, and there seem to be quite a few other financial issues with the charity itself. The whole video above reeks of self-congratulation - there is much more focus on the success of the social networking movement than the success of any charitable work in Uganda.
