How much would you be prepared to spend on an amazing meal?

vamos [Edit] [Delete] 13:55, 1 February '12

My sis wants to do something special for her birthday and suggested The Fat Duck. I was totally up for it too, UNTIL I SAW HOW MUCH IT WAS.

Given that 4 years ago, a Guardian review of the restaurant says you could get a three course meal there for about £60, now they only do two options - the taster menu, one with drinks extra on top and one where you get a specially chosen drink per course.

It's 7 courses and lasts for 4 or 5 hours, BUT what would you realistically pay for that?

I thought I'd be ok with £100, maybe a touch more as it's a rare treat, but she tells me we're looking at more like £230 per head for the menu (cheapest wine is £65 a bottle and service is extra) or £700+ for the A La Carte option. Plus I guess hotel costs and taxi / train fare to get there.

I ruled out the latter instantly, but man... I don't even think I can do the former when Michel Roux and Ottolenghi have restaurants up the road from my workplace at 1/3 of the price.

A bit of me would sort of like to try crab cake risotto ice cream, but a bigger part of me would rather have £600 to spend on a holiday.

What would you be prepared to spend on a really good meal? And what's the most expensive thing you've ever eaten?
