Which is the best broadband out of Sky and Virgin?

When I say best I probably mean fastest basic service rather than cheapest.

Are these companies open to haggling for a deal? Can you play them off against each other to knock down the monthly charge or the up front cost? Any success stories?

Why do they always make you pay for a land line? Does anyone actually use a land line anymore??!
