So I want to buy the missus a decent SLR for Christmas, budget round the £300 mark. I don't know much about them, so I don't want to buy a shitty camera.

Any advice from esteemed photographers around here? Like, what minimum megapixel count should I consider for professional photos, what optical zoom should I look for etc. I look forward to hearing your advice.
