Rugby World Cup quarter finals: It's business time

Gringo [Edit] [Delete] 14:33, 6 October '11

Right, the group stages are over, time for the knock out action to begin

Ireland v Wales
The pick of the games. Two sides playing well, so many key match ups: back row, front row, centres. No real shocks in the selections, although surprised that Stephen Jones is not on the bench for Wales. Too close to call

England v France
Two sides badly misfiring, although I'd edge France at being in the worst state. Parra still at 10 for them, but apart from that no real shocks. England pick Flood AND Wilkinson, playing the territory game then. France can never be discounted, but I thi nk England will edge it

Australia v SA
Australia should be favourites for this, but with their injury crisis it tips the scales back slightly towards evens. Pocock being fit is a big bonus. SA continue to pick Smit over the world best hooker Du Pleissis. Lost Botha again and Steyn, but still experienced. I say Aus by 8-10

NZ v Arg
The only 1/4 final that seems straightforward. Even with the massive loss of Carter and the inexperience of his replacements, the All Blacks should still win it by 15-20. Argentina don't really have depth and to be without Lobbe makes their task even harder. McCaw carrying an injury though, him out as well open it right up

In conclusion
Semis will be:
Wales (just) v England
Aus v NZ
