govt tinkering with the electoral register (politics nerd-centric)

noise_annoys [Edit] [Delete] 11:07, 16 September '11

not sure if we've all seen this already but not content with the current boundary review, it appears the Tories - cheerfully waved on, as ever, by the Lib Dems - are looking to give millions of voters the 'freedom' to disenfranchise themselves by not signing up to the electoral register.

While this might not have much of an impact on turnout, it could result in as much as a 25-30% drop-off in the number of electors - most of them in inner-city seats - which, if it materialises, is likely to mean more urban constituencies are scrapped/merged come the next boundary review, thereby making it harder to get shot of the Tories. Ah, the delights of FPTP.
