Guitar advice

dan_thw [Edit] [Delete] 13:43, 10 September '11

I'm starting a new band soon and despite being a perfect guitar for me in terms of playability (ie. it's small and light) I'm not sure my current guitar - a modern reissue Fender Mustang - is the best guitar for the sound I'm trying to create. I just think it would be a bit thin, and I could do with a bit more power.

Thing is, Kurt Cobain used a Mustang (as seen here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O67thYEOBxQ ) and it sounds great, and essentially my new band is going to have a similar sound to this song. He has definitely changed the bridge pickup though, which I assume gives him a more powerful sound.

Questions - What is it? Would it be relatively easy and inexpensive to modify my guitar to be like this (or similar to this) and would that solve my problems? Should I just sell up and buy a Fender strat standard HSS? Are there any other guitars £400 or under that would be better options?
