Much beloved by the writers of sit-coms as a way of exploring lame 'Will they, won't they' relationships, but does it really exist?

Is always the case that two people meet, then if nothing romantic happens immediately, they're destined to be friends with no hopes of going back?

This may or may not have some bearing on my current situation. Calls of JBHR would be much appreciated.
