a question about new orleans (not political)

easy_rob [Edit] [Delete] 12:08, 7 September '05
how come new orleans is situated in a place that is prone to hurricanes and so far below sea level?
im not sure how long new orleans has been around as a major city, but the fact that it is geographically a place that is going to have hurricanes reguarly means that it must have been hard for it to prosper as a major city. As every few years all the buildings get destroyed and have to be rebuilt, which i wouldve thought makes its more difficult to prosper as a major city.

would it not make sense to move the city further inland? as money spent re-building the effect of this hurricane and tidal surge will be wasted as in a few years time the houses and infrastructure will probably get destroyed again.
