SO, from what I understand from various bits of media coverage, generally, anyone earning less than 18k pa now has to pay more tax so that people earning more than 18k can pay less.

Is that more or less correct? I'm on 16k for my lovely office job, so getting shafted by a government who once claimed to be "socialist" is always a nice bonus.
