Some scientologist on some other website is having a go at me because I mocked him by saying he didn't think depression existed or something stupid like that.

Anyway I don't really know much about psychiatry and whilst I accept it has some bad bits and can cause damage I refuse for the time being to accept his tirade that they are all criminals intent on world domination and mass murder.

So I was wondering if someone could give me an unbiased view on the profession as a whole, specifically on its treatment in regards to Depression and Schizophrenia, the good bits that bad ones and everything in between.

I realise answering this very broad question might be a tall order but if someone could help me out it would be very much appreciated. Thank you.
