On this day in 1923, Howard Carter unsealed the burial chamber of Tutankhamun in Egypt, which he'd discovered the previous year.

King Tut is one of the best-known of the Pharaohs now, but he was relatively obscure (and historically unimportant) at the time of Carter's discovery. It's only the richness and completeness of what was found in the tomb, preserved for archaeological posterity rather than plundered by treasure-seekers, that's ensured his fame.

King Tut is also a villain in the 1960s Batman TV series, a novelty record by Steve Martin, and the proprietor of a wah-wah hut in Glasgow which was once voted Best Venue In The UK by NME readers just because Oasis played there once. I've been there. It's alright.
