I watched this again last night. The only bit that left me wondering is at the end:

First he opens his eyes and agrees with the final two guys that he can see.

Yet then there's that bit at the end where he trips and says "even with my eyes open I can't see a thing"

I just assumed he was properly blind when I saw it originally...but last night I wondered why he'd agree he was sighted or make them think it at all if he wasn't, leaving me to think it might have been a translational problem: maybe it's just meant to suggest that even though he can see he can still go arse over tit?

Oh well, it's a fantastic film. UTTERLY SO. Yes.
