good MP3 ID tagger?

grr.
i spent FOREVER updating all the mp3 tags on my iriver last weekend (through Winamp)... plugged it in to Winamp last night, and it had forgotten them all.

back to square 1. don't know why.

can anyone suggest a good (& free) ID tagger that will allow me to easily edit bunches of mp3s, etc...
