Do you think there's a clear North / South divide in current issues?

I'm talking about the integration issue.

BBC Northwest tonight has been running a set of special programes everyday this week, discussing whether there's a divide between the Muslim community and the non-Muslim community around these parts.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/england/F2770282?thread=3697365&post=43315498&s_edit=yes#p43315498

That (if it works, I know links don't tend to work on this website) makes pretty interesting reading, and it reflects a lot of what's been said on the programs.

Last night apparently, a Bolton man was being interviewed by the program. He said that he and the rest of his community simply didn't want to mix with the Muslim community, for the simple reason that neither party likes / accepts the other. He said where he lived, Muslims didn't want to integrate, and vice versa with his area.

Would you say I'm being pretty inaccurate in thinking that there's nothing like this anywhere south of say... Birmingham?

Personally, I think there's a big difference in Southern people's attitudes to not only other communities, or minorities etc., but towards actually discussing these issues. It seems pretty taboo to mention even the fact there is an obvious separation in Muslim / non-Muslim communites, to a MUCH greater extent when it comes to 'non Northern' people.

Now, since I've not spent any time living down South at all, I'm admitting I could well be wrong.
But would you say I'm right, and attitudes in the South are much different to issues like this? If yes, what would you say is the reason behind it? Would you blame it on badly forced integration, or simply the fact that we're all blinkered racists?
