Literary Value

So, on wishpig's course they discussed literary value and this is what she said about it in the 'BOOKS' thread:

'it was basically "why isnt all literature equal?" and "who is it who decides certain literature is valuable or not?"
the conclusion was "it's subjective, one person's literary masterpiece is another person's toilet paper."'

I would disagree: surely that would be as silly as claiming everyone is beautiful, when clearly some people are just butt ugly and some people will never look ugly no matter what they do.

Surely some books just are good and have value and others are just don't have it?
