My two cents pn this whole Arctic Monkeys thing

dove_from_above [Edit] [Delete] 19:39, 8 February '06

Now, I may stuggle to articulate myself properly, so bear with me

The crux of it is this: What's everyone's problem with Arctic Monkeys? I know indie snobbery is now a common phrase, but has it ever been more apt than certain people's perception of this band?

Agreed, the hype and everything has gotten to be ridiculous, but surely people have learnt to take the NME et al with a pinch of salt now anyway? Arctic Monkeys, to me, are a slighty better than average indie band. But I know that if I was 15, 16, 17 again I'd probably think they were the best thing since sliced cheese (and forgive me if this comes across as patronising)

If somebody says that they think Arctic Monkeys are shit and the general public are idiots, that wont make me value their musical opinion any more than I would have done if they were exclaiming the beauty of the third Cat Power album. Well done, you like something that isn't in the charts

Am I alone in thinking this?

I don't own the AM album, and I can't see that I will be buying it either. But 400,000 (or whatever) people have and seem to love it. So they're ALL fuckwits then? Alex Turner seems to have a pretty good grasp of lyrics and the stuff I've heard is catchy enough. If anything I actually feel sorry for the band as they will never live up to this expectation with their second album, but again, I wont be losing any sleep over it

I sincerely believe that anybody who claims to think Arctic Monkeys are shit is doing so with one eye on credibility points. Which I think is pathetic. I know everybody has their opinions and everything, but how can you not appreciate the appeal of a band that so many people have fallen in love with?

I know I am swimming against the tide of popular DiS opinion, and will no doubt receive some 'witty' ripostes from the usual suspects for saying this. But really, am I the only one that can see right through this inevitable backlash?
