The Lad 'Imself

Silentcommand [Edit] [Delete] 11:42, 27 December '05

I saw one of the most bizarre pieces of television of the year last night.

During the BBC2 doc on the 'Unknown Tony Hancock', amongst all the recollections of people who knew the comedian was a strange interlude when an obviously zonked Pete Doherty sat on a bed, mumbled incoherently and then seemed to be struggling to tune his guitar. I think it was supposed to be a song, but it just sounded like a guy muttering to himself.

I'm not sure what the Beeb were playing at, unless it was to contrast images of the rapidly declining Tony Hancock with someone who looked even worse than he did. As Doherty was the only 'celebrity' wheeled out for the show, you wondered what the point of it was, other than an excuse for the BBC to get some footage of him before he's found blue and stiff with a spike in his arm.

I look forward to the BBC sticking Doherty randomly in other documentaries, such as 'Life In The Undergrowth' (Doherty crawling out of a hedge) or 'The Story of God' (Lord Winstone finds Doherty lying in a gutter outside a church).
