Sunday Last.fm thread - what have you been listening to this week

Lambchops [Edit] [Delete] 10:45, 12 October '14

Here's mine

1) We Were Promised Jetpacks - 49
2) The Twilight Sad - 29
3) Ex-Hex - 23
4) Sufjan Stevens - 18
5) Anais Mitchell - 15
6) future of the left - 14
7) Woman's Hour - 11
8) Belle and Sebastian - 10
9) The Vaselines - 10
10) Gulp - 9

1) Entirely the new album, took me a few listens to fully get into it. Strong opening few tracks and back half of the album but for me the one-two of gloomier tracks (Night Terror and Disconnecting) in the middle of the album don't quite work, too many vocal effects which don't really suit Adam's voice and they just drag a little. I think there's also been a concious decision to be relatively restrained which means there's a disappointing lack of "big" tracks like Quiet Little Voices, Circles and Squares and so on. Elsewhere though the tweaks they've made to their sound work fantastically well, there's definitely a lot more of a subtle touch at work.

2) Pre-gig listening.

3) Rips is a great album. Short, focused, gloriously enjoyable power pop. A fantastic lightweight treat, perfect for pretending that autumn hasn't set in yet.

8) Limited to buying only one of the reissued albums on vinyl. Push Barman was a bit pricey so swithered between Tigermilk and Sinister and eventually plumped for the former (it's one of my standard albums to listen to when hungover). Feel free to tell me how wrong I was and that I should have chosen another one!

10) Side project involving Guto from SFA and singer Linsey Leven. A nice slice of psychedelic folky goodness that I think has somewhat slipped under the radar, which is a shame as it's a good album.
