What's the difference really between Alternative and Indie Rock?

yuggy [Edit] [Delete] 17:39, 7 September '14

Should we (both fans and critics) just retire the indie tag?

Also, how is it that pretty much all rock n roll, psych, folk, electro pop and twee guitar pop records get tagged indie even when they get put out on major labels? Rock music is such a clusterfuck when it comes to genres, no other genre is this much of a mess. I mean some say indie is just light rock but then we have Dinosaur Jr, Pavement, Pixies, Sonic Youth et all who aren't exactly soft... what really is 'indie rock' any more?

I've mentioned it a butt load of times on here but I have OCD and sometimes I get these boring subjects ruminating in my head so need to let off steam even if I know the answer! Mad, I know. Humour me.
