Vapourwave is the new Punk

GoatmeatMF [Edit] [Delete] 09:21, 20 November '13

Recent features on this in Dummy mag which seems to be really pushing Vapourwave as a big thing, but the idea of it as new 'punk' is the bit I like and am going to run with:

this article: http://www.dummymag.com/features/next-saint-pepsi-and-new-generation

"short tracks with messages that are very literal, made with minimal intent"

And also this big article on it all: http://www.dummymag.com/features/essay-invest-in-vaporwave-futures

Lots of the current bands and artists you need are, conveniently, on this new compilation here:

If I was to pick one it would be Luxury Elite - he's my vapourwave poster boy (yeah, over James Ferraro & Dan Lopatin who would be a big part of the evolutionary timeline)

Vapourwave = the new punk rock.

Direct comparisons: Short tracks, 3-chord riffs, outsider commentary of modern culture, disposable, clearly defined visual aesthetic, DIY (almost all music is nowadays, but still I'm counting it). also, some people may find it obnoxiously hard to listen to, like Mrs Meat who absolutely hates it. Parents will probably hate it too.

Equivalent inverted comparisons: dystopian future from the perspective of the monied, high-fashion glamour over heroin-chic; luxury elitism (exclusive to all?) instead of street-level socialism.

Yeah, new punk, mos def.
