After many years of subsisting with some speakers and a laptop, I'm finally going to invest (now that I am in gainful and long term employ) in a decent hi-fi.

So, so that I don't look like a mug when I go into Richer Sounds (actually it'll be the French equivalent), what do I need to pay most attention to? My gut is to spend more on speakers and amp than on the components (currently planning CD and turntable, dependent on price). I don't have LOTS and LOTs of money to spend but I am happy to spend a fair bit, especially on speakers and amp as previously suggested.

Could any of you recommend any kit, any brands and any deals that you particularly recommend? Am in the UK next weekend and am not averse to buying there if necessary and economically worthwhile.
