2013: The year pop gets great again?

vamos [Edit] [Delete] 11:21, 18 July '13

Well, it might be? If I wrote for the NME I could totally link this lot together and argue it's a 'scene'.

Pop's been shit for a while, basically all ripping each other off. Most Katy Perry songs sound identical to Jessie J ones and everybody is just using the same 3 production techniques to do Guetta-esque outros and 'OH OH OH OH OH OHHHH' bridges.

But I *think* like everything, a few people are rallying against this and turning the tide.

Firstly, the Tegan & Sara album was really, utterly joyful songwriting from start to end: http://drownedinsound.com/releases/17465/reviews/4146021

Next, the Little Boots comeback was somewhere between Saint Etienne and a more chart friendly LCd Soundsystem record: http://drownedinsound.com/releases/17626/reviews/4146375

Thirdly, JT released a real grower of a record and of the 3, I've probably listened to it the most: http://drownedinsound.com/releases/17535/reviews/4146182

There is a part 2 coming later on as well.

Further proof: a new series of Annie EPs are imminent - http://www.popjustice.com/songs/annie-hold-on/ , Katy B has a new LP out at the end of the year (didn't like the recent single that much but the Danger EP was superb), Nicola Roberts is writing material for Little mix, Pet Shop Boys latest is supposedly very good, the original Sugababes are back at it and there might be new stuff from more leftfield pop / r&B stars like Azealia Banks, M.I.A., Ciara & Keri Hilson coming soon too.

So maybe this should be some sort of a rolling pop thread...
