Surfer Blood - Pythons (related 'context in reviews' thread)

polaropposites [Edit] [Delete] 16:52, 13 June '13

Given this a few listens, doesn't seem as good on the whole as Astrocoast but enjoying it, good fairly laid-back summer album anyhow. Demon Dance and Weird Shapes are ace. Looking forward to seeing them play Electrowerkz on Monday. Has anyone else heard it?

Also: seems this review (http://drownedinsound.com/releases/17692/reviews/4146521) is being criticised on Twitter for not having mentioned the domestic abuse case surrounding the lead singer. Conversely, the Pitchfork one (http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/18123-surfer-blood-pythons/) seems to slam him to the point that it dominates his entire angle (for me anyway). Agree that context is important but only to give a picture of the history of what the album's about, not part of the quality of the album itself. Where do people stand on this?
